After getting the project of creating a short video which was titled 'The Prisoner' we had to produce and edit all of our shots. Here is my final product of the project:
The Prisoner
1. Opening shot is interesting, although you should watch the angle (it's slightly tilted). When you're doing your final project, you need to make sure that you are a little quicker with the editing (although the held take works here)
2. The music is very effective, as is the black and white grading
3. Not sure the continuity between the first two shots works
4. Your tracking shot is a little shaky - you need to practice these if you are going to use them. Ideally, it should look quite smooth, although that's hard to do without a dolly or a stedicam
5. The grading on the third shot (the MLS from behind) is slightly different to the other two (a little more washed out). You sometimes need to adjust each shot to match them. Again, the shot is a little too shakey; really, your camera-operator needs a steady hand
6. The cut at 31 seconds is a little odd since you're effectively jumping between two shots which are very similar. The pan isn't bad although it's a little jerky
7. The zoom which ends at 00:40 is quite effective; hard to get these right
8. When you cut to the CU of the tablet at about 00:47, you break the 180 degree rule (when you look at continuity, you'll find out what this means).
9. There is a continuity glitch at about 00:50 (previously, your hand is not on the tablet, then it is). Similarly, when you enter the door, there is a slight continuity issue with the shot at about 00:57 (it's not usual to cut between shots of the same type; it would be more typical to cut to a reverse angle from the house showing you entering)
10. be careful of reflections. When you close the door, you can see your crew reflected in the glass just before the edit
11. The music cuts out rather abruptly, although this may be deliberate.
12. The ECU of the door handle is quite effective.
13. There is a lot of hiss on the soundtrack. You may need to consider this if you are planning on using dialogue in the future
14. The sound editing is a little harsh. It's worth playing with cross-fades to take the edge off. Also, be careful of the light when shooting indoors
15. I do like the shot at 01:18 - this is well-lit and well-framed. However, the edit at 01:22 is a little odd (again, you've cut to a similar angle and distance, although you appear to have cut your subject's head off a bit; you need to be careful of this). It would be more usual to cut to a CU of the subject or a reverse angle of what he is looking at
16. You appear to have people laughing on your soundtrack - not sure if this is deliberate or not?
17. The two-shot at 01:30 is quite good, although better if straighter
18. The CU at 01:31 is very good, as is your reverse angle at 01:33
19. I'm pleased that you're using a range of different angles, although there is a rather awkward jump cut at about 01:36. Be careful about camera-positioning; you don't want to obscure the lens
20. You've not coloured the CU at 01:41 - is this deliberate?
21. The end is quite effective; again, I think a little more work on the audio transitions would make this even more powerful
Overall, you've demonstrated that you can organise a shoot effectively, use a range of locations, apply camera movement and compose shots using a range of different distances and angles. You've also been able to put together a coherent narrative and develop a practical response to a script. Your next step now is to consider how to make these elements work more effectively and slickly; bear in mind the limitations as well as the possibilities of the technology. Also consider how to effectively edit your shots into sequence, particularly considering how you might bridge between shots to avoid jumps or continuity snarls. A very good attempt - well done.
Very good piece, I liked the use of music and the method you used to open the door was quite cool. You also did a good job working in low lighting, I didn't have a lamp but I think I'll use one in future low-light scenes - the black and white filter was a nice touch too :)
